Guidelines for Charitable Giving

Over 100 Years of Helping Others

Since our founding in 1897, Wells Fargo Financial and our team members have helped meet community needs through charitable giving. While our charitable giving guidelines are outlined below, the overriding priority is to support programs whose primary purpose is to benefit low- and moderate-income individuals and families. For countless years, Wells Fargo Financial, by matching team member contributions, has made United Way the primary organization for our financial support and campaign leadership efforts.

Where we direct our contributions

Economic improvement for adults and families:

  • Affordable housing

  • Financial literacy
    • Wells Fargo provides people of all ages nationwide access to financial skills development, in English and Spanish, through our Hands On Banking/El Futuro en tus Manos program. Information on this program is available online at: www.handsonbanking.org and www.elfuturoentusmanos.org

  • Training people to obtain and retain jobs
Examples include: job-seeking skill development, job retraining programs, job placement services, and housing programs, etc.

Social Services:

  • Assistance with basic needs
  • Child and adult abuse programs
  • Child care and youth programs
  • Health services and education

Examples include: shelters for the homeless or abused family members, food banks, day care centers, substance abuse programs, organizations serving individuals with physical and mental challenges, etc.

Requests that receive lower priority

  • Art and culture
  • Capital campaigns
  • Education (see the Wells Fargo Educational Matching Gifts Program information at the end of these guidelines)
  • Hospitals
  • Organizations already receiving funding through United Way

Requests we will not consider

  • Direct aid to individuals
  • Direct purchase of computer hardware or software
  • Endowment funds
  • National health agencies and their local affiliates
  • Scientific, medical or applied research
  • Religious organizations that are denominational or sectarian in purpose
  • Political organizations, projects, or campaigns
  • Tax-supported activities which are the primary responsibility of federal, state, or local governments and agencies

Examples include: individuals, customers or team members, who are dealing with an unexpected event, churches, fire fighter and police organizations, veterans’ organizations, etc.

How to apply for contributions

While contribution requests are accepted throughout the year, we do recommend you submit your request as early in the year as possible. There is no formal application document, rather you should review our giving guidelines for compatibility and our information checklist below.

Checklist for requests

Requests for funding should be as brief and concise as possible and include the organization’s mission, history, purpose, geographic scope of service, volunteer participation plus major accomplishments. Please also include the items listed below:

  • Dollar amount requested
  • How the requested funds will be used, especially how they serve low- and and moderate-income individuals and how program/project results will be evaluated
  • Current annual operating budget including program/project budget related to the request
  • Most recent financial statement (prefer audited financial statements)
  • List of major funding sources (other corporations, foundations, etc.) and funding level plus organizations being contacted with similar request
  • List of the Board of Directors (no addresses or phone numbers)

Evaluation factors

Requests are evaluated according to the organization’s responsiveness to the community, staff capability, financial management, commitment of board members and volunteers, performance against objectives, self-evaluation process, duplication with existing programs, impact of the project/program, stability and breadth of funding sources both current and long term.

How to apply for sponsorship

Wells Fargo Financial often sponsors events to enhance a community’s quality of life and promote diverse opportunities, such as: fine arts presentations for low and moderate income individuals and festivals to promote greater cultural awareness.

For consideration, please provide us the information at least 60 days prior to the event:

  • Event invitation or brochure
  • Expected attendees/participants
  • Event budget including list of other funders
  • Amount requested
  • Current IRS 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) letter with Federal Tax ID number

Wells Fargo Educational Matching Gifts Program

Because our team members, company and our communities all benefit when educational institutions are generously supported, Wells Fargo Financial encourages team member contributions by matching them on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The team member’s gift to an eligible educational institution is essentially doubled by the company’s participation.

Eligibility for an Educational Matching Gift

All team members — regular, part-time, and flexible — of Wells Fargo Financial are eligible and encouraged to participate.

Educational foundations and accredited educational institutions — pre-kindergarten, elementary, secondary, junior college, college and graduate, professional and technical schools — public and private, located within the United States, it possessions or Canada are eligible to receive matching gift contributions from Wells Fargo Foundation. Gifts must be to specific schools, school districts or educational foundations. All recipient institutions must be nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.
